There were many new words and phrases the world had to get their head around following the global COVID-19 pandemic – words such as Covidiot, blursday and spike protein all became common lingo. In this blog, we are going to focus on the latter of the three. The spike protein is a protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. The spike protein is responsible for allowing the virus to enter and infect human cells and is also believed to be the main driver on inflammation & long COVID.
But how does it work? The spike protein binds to the ACE2 receptor. This then allows the virus to replicate inside the cells. The spike protein is a target of the vaccines, which were rolled out in record time, for COVID-19. By targeting the protein, it stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that can recognize and try to neutralize the spike protein.
It is difficult to say if spike proteins are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but they are a crucial part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, which we all know can be harmful to human health; even leading to death in some circumstances. The spike protein lets the virus enter and infect human cells, leading to a an abundance of symptoms and health problems.
However, it is important to note that the spike protein is also the target of the COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccines work by prompting the body to produce an immune response against the spike protein, which can help protect against infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. There have been many concerns about potential side effects of the vaccines, with some studies now looking at the long term effects of the vaccines, if they are as safe as first thought & whether or not they are leading to further complications.
With their being no clear answer as to whether the spike proteins are helpful or a hindrance, some people are now searching for a way to eradicate their bodies of the spike protein. A study has been conducted to look at how a combination of Bromelain & Acetylcysteine can disrupt the spike protein.A study carried out in the summer of 2022 has looked at Nattokinase as another supplements that could help decrease the effect of the spike protein in your body.
