It feels like every week there’s a new product being released which with help alleviate some ailment in your life. One of the products to really come to fruition in the last two years has been blue light filter glasses.
Blue light filter glasses are designed to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of blue light emitted by electronic devices. With more and more people spending time staring at a screen for hours at work, then scrolling aimlessly whilst simultaneously half watching the newest Netflix series everyone is raving about, its critically important to look after your eye health. I wanted to see if the glasses really lived up to the hype, here’s what I found:
Effectiveness:
The whole idea of blue light filter glasses is to block blue light wavelengths from electronic devices which can lead to headaches, eye strain and sleep disruption. As someone who suffers with all three, I was filled equally with hope as I was with skepticism. Surely a pair of glasses can’t help with all three, can it?
The first time I tried the glasses on, my initial thoughts were on how different they made they room look, the lights were duller, the TV had a bit of an orange tinge to it but not anything that was too distracting. Having worn the glasses now religiously for around 3 months, I have felt a monumental difference in the eye strain and headaches I was experiencing. Starting a screen practically from the moment I wake up, I was suffering severe headaches eye strain so this has been a huge success.
I wouldn’t necessarily say I am sleeping any better but that could be related to something different. I feel like it is important to note that I imagine the effects of the glasses are different for everyone!
Comfort:
Having not worn glasses prior to trying the blue light filter glasses, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little part of me worried about how they would make me look. Stupid, I know but it was still playing at the back of my mind.
On the physical comfort side of things, I couldn’t fault the glasses. I can sit with them on 7 to 8 hours a day and I am yet to feel any sort of discomfort wearing them.
I’d be lying if I said they didn’t take any getting used to but after a week or so, I was more than comfortable in them.
Style:
Let’s be honest, blue light filter glasses aren’t a fashion statement, they are a practical purchase. I know there are hundreds of different frames available in a variety of styles when it comes to prescription glasses but certainly while I was searching for a pair, the styles were few and far between.
I ended up opting go for some black rectangular relatively thick frames- you have to consider the fact that you’ll likely just have them on at your desk so does it really matter how they look? Don’t get me wrong, the glasses don’t look bad- I just maybe wouldn’t wear them out and about!
Finally, my thoughts on whether or not the glasses are worth the money. Well, yes – I think they are. Having tried several ‘smart clothing’ fads, I was cynical heading into this purchase. Suffering nigh on chronic headaches and severe eye strain, I was extremely doubtful that such a simple accessory would make enough of a difference to justify the price tag.
I am beyond happy with the way in which the glasses have lessened the headaches and all but eradicated the eye strain and will, without a shadow of a doubt, continue to use them
